An article in the January 2017 supplement for New England Journal of Medicine analyzed 18 studies a class of drugs called selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) that target the estrogen receptor or receptors. drugs were developed by Eli Lilly, Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline, Merck, and AstraZeneca. They work by inhibiting the normal conversion of testosterone into estrogen, thereby reducing the amount of testosterone in body and thus the levels of sex hormones in women.

FDA says the drug is effective and safe when used with other oral contraceptives.
But some users complain of serious side-effects including mood swings, high blood pressure, muscle pains and seizures.

Dr Andrew Moulden, consultant gynaecologist at Bristol Royal Hospital for Women and Girls, has advised doctors on prescribing the drug and said: "With women having a choice, they probably should be given it.
"We need to be aware that they are taking a high impact, long term course (of the drug) to treat menopause.
"It has had a role for women as far back the 1960s but it has gained more prominence in the last few years."
Prof Andrew Witty, professor of epidemiology at the University Bristol, said: "I have never seen this level of concern about drug."
A spokeswoman from the British Pregnancy Advisory Service said that since early 2013, more women had sought advice about the drug than any previous year, and only a few had been given it.
