The research said number of new and renewed prescriptions in the UK increased by 6% to 8.8 million in 2015, compared with 6% the previous year.
But it warned that the trend was driven partly by price increases since 2013.
It did not take into account the growth of price generic hair loss drugs from 2014 to 2015, but estimates from the Department of Health suggest their price has increased by more than 120%.
Dr Stephen White, from the British Association of Dermatologists, said that while the issue of pricing drugs was "widely debated", it important to remember that the cost of hair loss treatment "is not the only reason why patients are turning avodart generic price to medication".
"For many people, the primary intention of prescription medication is just to keep the symptoms under control, and that may not always coincide with cost," he said.
"A significant proportion of people with hair loss are at a very low risk of developing other diseases, so are unlikely to seek out treatment."
'Families in crisis'
He urged patients to talk their GP about the cost of treatment ahead buying the product.
"It is also important not to be afraid ask for a lower dose particular condition because of the potential benefits, as well asking for cheaper generic versions of the drug," he added.
Dr James Macfarlane, clinical director at the Hair Loss UK charity, said: "Hair is a leading reason for being referred to a dermatologist, and the issue of cost is great concern to so many people who are having to spend vast sums on medication to alleviate their condition.
"People need to be aware that many of the medications they are prescribed will come with a price tag attached, and as a general practice we strongly encourage our patients to talk their dermatologists about the cost before they make any decision."
